I know today is Pi Day, but this day has always had a different meaning for me - It's my sister's birthday! So instead of pie, I've got cake on the blog to commemorate her birthday.
This is a pretty cool idea for a cake - It does take a little bit more work than a traditional cake, but it has crispiness inside the cake due to cooking each layer. I got this recipe from Byron Talbott (with a step-by-step video, in case you need more visuals!) and it was easy to make.
Don't skip the step about making brown butter - That's what really transforms this cake from storebought-tasting to "whoa, this is a great cake."
I'll admit I added too much mixture to the cake each time (which resulted in super uneven layers) but the cake still turned out well. Whenever I make this again, I may smack down the pan a few times to try and even out the layers before popping it under the broiler.
Give it a shot the next time you have to make a cake for a special occasion. Or if you want to spoil yourself - that works, too.
